Description
When occasional rain would come, the mostly dry Tsauchab River of Western Namibia would flood and form shallow pools where camel thorn acacia trees would thrive. About 600 to 800 years ago, one of these pools was cut off from the main channel and the trees subsequently died. The area is so dry and devoid of insects that the dead trees still stand without decomposition. The place is called Dead Vlei meaning “dead marsh” from the English word dead and the Afrikaans word for marsh. Today the area has become one of the signature destinations of Namibia, where in early morning, the black, sun-scorched trees along with crisp shadows form compelling patterns against the red dunes and particular clear blue skies of the Namib-Naukluft Park.
