Description
As marked by the stone monument known as the omphalos (navel), the ancient Greeks considered Delphi to be the center of the world. However, you would never know it, considering this rare scene of a deserted walkway. We visited just before the 2020 pandemic arose but already, tourists had vanished. Delphi, formerly also called Pytho, is the ancient sanctuary where powerful individuals consulted the oracle about important decisions. People came from all over Greece and beyond to have their questions about the future answered by the Pythia, the priestess of Apollo. And her answers, usually cryptic, could determine the course of everything from when a farmer planted his seedlings, to when an empire declared war.
Doug and Marcy Wielfaert are a husband and wife team located in Tennessee near the Great Smoky Mountains. Our home range certainly colors our portfolio, but we love traveling across the country and around the globe to capture scenes like this one. We would be honored if you would “like”, “favorite” or comment on this image, doing so helps increase our search engine rankings.
