Late January is a quiet time in the Cades Cove area of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Occasional snowfall adds a particular element of quaintness to the historic structures preserved in this idyllic mountain location. The Cable mill, located halfway through the Cades Cove Loop Road is one of the most popular stops in the park, located next to a visitor center, and also features the Becky Cable Farm historic structures. John P. Cable built his grist mill in Cades Cove in the early 1870s, and it also served as a sawmill, allowing residents to switch from long home construction to timber framing. This is an example of an overshot water wheel, a gravity wheel which harnesses the force of gravity acting vertically on the water as it travels from the top to the bottom of the wheel. Aside from church, the grist mill was certainly a center of society, providing not only ground corn meal but served as a useful source of news, commerce and even opportunities for courting.
