The 1.5 mile (2.4 km) avenue of arching live oak trees at Wormsloe Plantation near Savannah, Georgia is a must-see destination any time of year, but the scene is especially beautiful in the winter when the resurrection ferns are in full growth. Like Spanish moss, this epiphyte, or “air plant”, uses a host plant (live oak, pecan, or sabal palm) as its growing surface. The ferns do not damage the trees. In late February, the ferns cover the live oak trees of the southern United States, making scenes like this one ever more appealing. During the summer months the ferns are brown and appear dead, and almost disappear into the tree trunk host. With the cool, damp weather of winter these ferns experience an annual "resurrection" of verdancy.
