Description
The 1.5 mile (2.4 km) avenue of arching live oak trees at Wormsloe Plantation near Savannah, Georgia is a must-see destination any time of year, but the scene is especially beautiful in the winter when the resurrection ferns are in full growth. Like Spanish moss, this epiphyte, or “air plant”, uses a host plant (live oak, pecan, or sabal palm) as its growing surface. The ferns do not damage the trees. Their root system is composed of long, winding rhizomes that tuck into the nooks and crannies of the tree’s bark, collecting rainwater and nutrients from airborne dust and nutrients leaching from the trees themselves. In late February, the ferns cover the live oak trees of the southern United States, making scenes like this one ever more appealing. During the summer months the ferns are brown and appear dead, and almost disappear into the tree trunk host. With the cool, damp weather of winter these ferns experience an annual "resurrection" of verdancy.
The Wormsloe Historic Site, informally known as Wormsloe Plantation, is a state historic site near Savannah, Georgia, in the southeastern United States. The site consists of 822 acres (3.33 km2) protecting part of what was once the Wormsloe Plantation, a large estate established by one of Georgia's colonial founders, Noble Jones (c. 1700-1775).
