Description
Many of the farm homes of Prince Edward Island Canada featured high-pitched roofs and cedar-shake siding like this one. These houses were referred to as "vernacular homes" because there were based on standard architectural styles of the day, but were built by carpenters who did not follow formal plans. This particular one follows the pattern of an "Island Ellie", taking its nickname from the L-shaped floor plan. More than a century later, many still stand like this one we found overlooking a busy highway. I used a color polarizing filter to feature the blues and greens that caught our eye that day, then in post-processing, I use some techniques to give the image a more "painterly" presentation.
Doing business as Marcy’s Photo Journey, Doug and Marcy Wielfaert are a husband and wife team located in Tennessee near the Great Smoky Mountains. Our home range certainly colors our portfolio, but we love traveling across the country and around the globe to capture scenes like this one. Seeing a beautiful old house like this abandoned makes me sad. Wonder if someone will find it and restore it to its former glory?
Douglas Wielfaert replied:
Lori, we found so, so many like this one. I wish someone could restore them. We did watch as one smaller than this was restored to its former glory.
