Description
Watching this group of elephants crossing the Chobe River was a highlight of a recent trip to Africa. We found the pack as they stood on the Botswana bank of the river, sizing up the crossing while shifting from leg to leg in anticipation of a swim in deep water with crocodiles in abundance. The pack had their eye on some wonderful grazing available in mid-channel islands, but there were newborns involved and they must be protected. We watched an immediate family surrounded one of these new-borns and held our breath seeing just the tip of the little guy's trunk protrude from the water as he made his first swim. We were so intent on watching that we were barely able to capture this image. It was right into the evening sun, but for us, the backlighting so captured the deep richness of the moment. As these beautiful and intelligent creatures emerged from the water, they exchanged greetings and began their evening feast, while the young elephants romped nearby.
