Artist's Description

We figured we would still have light during the long days of July, so we entered Yellowstone late one evening intending to loop from the west entrance then north through Gardiner, Montana. There were few vehicles on the road, so we didn't have to deal with a traffic jam in order to stop and capture pictures of this fellow. We found him grazing on grass and clover along the Grand Loop Road north of Roaring Mountain and just south of Grizzly Lake, appropriately enough. I can only speculate that this might be a very young male. The bear was relatively oblivious to our presence and would sniff the air occasionally to check his surroundings
I managed to catch him with his mouth open a few times that looked like a growl, but he was not signaling displeasure, rather just something like stretching his jaws. For quick escape to safety, we crouched behind vehicles to get these shots coupled with using very long range wildlife lenses.

I did spend a great deal of time on bear...
